St. Benedict of Nursia (July 11th)
St. Benedict was born in Nursia, in central Italy, around the year 480. As a young man he was sent away to study in Rome, but appalled by the corruption in society, he withdrew to live as a hermit at Subiaco. He quickly attracted disciples and began to establish small monasteries in the neighbourhood.
Around the year 525 Benedict moved to Monte Cassino with a band of monks. Later in life Benedict wrote “Rule for Monks” based on his own experience of fallible people striving to live out the gospel … His ‘Rule” proved to be so good and well balanced that it was disseminated widely, becoming in time the model for all Western monasticism. Benedict died at Monte Cassino in about the year 550.
Dear Friends
In our prayers this week we pray for:
– our clergy and churches;
– those who are sick, suffering, fearful or in need, remembering those suffering from COVID-19 and their caregivers, those feeling isolated and those who are vulnerable;
– for peace within our country, and in the world;
– those who have died and those who mourn;
– the victims of violence and natural disasters;
– our Indigenous brothers and sisters, especially remembering their hurt and grief at this time;
– refugees, remembering those fleeing the Taliban regime, and those fleeing war in the Ukraine.
Prayer for Peace:
Oh God, it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace.
Let the design of your great love shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows,
and give peace to your Church, peace among nations,
peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts;
through your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (BAS) pg 677
