God’s guarantee

‘He who had prepared for us this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. ‘ (2 Corinthians 5:5 ESV)

May 2nd, 2022

‘He who had prepared for us this very thing is God, who has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. ‘ (2 Corinthians 5:5 ESV)

Is there the expectation that, somehow, the believer will go from basic faith in Jesus to resurrection glory without any change or maturation of faith in the meantime?

And, is there the belief that – as outlined in this verse- the Holy Spirit is a part of a believer’s experience of knowing and loving God?

With the Holy Spirit as the down payment or guarantee of resurrection bodies when Jesus returns, the believer can not only know the transforming power of God in their own life (i.e. the emergence of the fruit of the Spirit) but may also be endowed with one or more gift of the Spirit to continue in building up of the church until he comes again.

There must be, surely, some purpose for God, ‘giving us the Holy Spirit as a guarantee’? It must be more than some secret knowledge of the resurrection. Especially in the light of the promise and commission that the disciples would receive power when the Holy Spirit came upon them and the commission to go out into all the world.

Whilst the Holy Spirit is good for us, he is also a subject of our witness to others as the Spirit’s presence brings greater understanding of the things of God and Jesus; – ‘I know that my Redeemer lives!’ The awakening and empowering that the Holy Spirit brings have always been the essential foundations of true and lasting works of God in his people.

Our witness to our experience of the Holy Spirit and the demonstration of the power of God is what a cynical and sceptical world needs to see and hear today.

There is a lot of talk filling the ‘blogosphere’, social media etc. –  and that’s what is … just talk! I believe that people need to see the evidence of the miracles themselves in order to believe. Hence the giving of the Holy Spirit – for us and for the church through us.

‘When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come’. (John 16:13 ESV)

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 ESV)

For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. (Romans 8:13 ESV)

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (Romans 8:9 ESV)

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.  You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.  Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (1 Corinthians 1:1-7 ESV)

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.  And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live by the Spirit, let us also walk by the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.

(Galatians 5:22-29 ESV)
